The Beekman, A Thompson Hotel



In one of New York City’s oldest neighborhoods sits a boutique hotel with a lot of history. The Financial District is not particularly known for its attractions or as a tourist destination. The walls and halls are considered majestic by many who have been a guest. The architecture is 130 years old, a skyscraper turned hotel, after years of renovations and restoration eventually became The Beekman, A Thompson Hotel.


With the Brooklyn Bridge and other iconic sites as the backdrop, guest can access amazing views and locations from The Beekman. The hotel opened n 2016, however the building itself is part of New York City’s immense history dating back to 1883. A blend of modern-day luxury and rich history, vintage details exist juxtaposed against contemporary amenities. Once considered one of Manhattan’s original skyscrapers at nine stories, the historic building stood abandoned for many years.


A nine-story atrium leading up to a pyramidal skylight remains a stunning attraction to guests. Many fashion houses such as Maison Martin Margiela used to space to introduce new collections. The location was even a theater that put on the play “Hamlet” in 1761 prior to its 1883 re-imagining by architectural firm Silliman & Farnsworth.


The Beekman Hotel has paid homage to the building’s unique past as an artist’s haven where the likes of Edgar Allen Poe utilized the architectural gem to work from. Art adorns it walls, curated by Katherine Gass, the hotel’s private curator including a picture of Edgar himself. Swedish architect Martin Brudnizki helmed the much storied building’s revival, preserving intimate Victorian details and vintage décor. Keith McNally, renowned restaurateur has a dining establishment included in The Beekman’s recent resurgence. Chef Tom Colicchio also has a restaurant in the hotel.


A Landmark Victorian edifice, nestled between the East and Hudson rivers, steps from City Hall Park, has 287 rooms, which include two penthouse suites waiting to introduce an ambiance of old and new, nostalgia and modernity.
